University of B.C. Okanagan Fine Arts students have completed a new mural on the outside of the downtown Kelowna Columbia Bottle Depot.

The mural 'Hope Floats' was painted over the span of one month by 14 students taking a mural class instructed by Jorden Doody and her partner, David.

"We really wanted to reflect on the beauty of summer in the region," Doody said. "I myself grew up here in Kelowna, and I just remember the dreaminess of playing in the lake and watching the sunset and how the colours reflect on the water. It was always such a euphoric time."

Painted on the building located at 1314 St. Paul Street is a hand letting go of a paper boat into the water.

"The design concept this year is based on hope and bringing joy to the area. We really wanted to have an organic design moving across, like rippling water moving across the building. And this year we're including a human element rather than an animal element," Doody added.

'Hope Floats' is the sixth mural completed in Kelowna by the UBCO mural classes.

The mural was completed on Aug. 14, but not without a small hiccup.

"We got tagged the other day. That happens." Doody followed up by saying, "The great thing about paint is that you can paint over it."'

The mural has been finished with a graffiti coat to maintain the image.
