The Kelowna Actors Studio presents Tennessee Williamsѻý masterwork, The Glass Menagerie, directed by Margaret Gobie.
The popularity of this American gem has remained constant since its inception. The Glass Menagerie opened in Chicago in 1944 and has had eight New York revivals from 1965 to the present. The most recent is currently running on Broadway starring Sally Field and is nominated for a 2017 Tony Award. The 2013 Broadway revival received seven Tony nominations and three Drama Desk nominations.
Williams is considered to be among the most prolific and important American playwrights of the 20th century. Director Margaret Gobie said ѻýItѻýs a gift to work on his material and to have the opportunity to introduce new generations to Tennessee Williamsѻý work.ѻý
This semi-autobiographical account of Tennessee Williamsѻý early days in 1930ѻýs St. Louis is a heartbreaking yet often funny ѻýmemory playѻý told from the perspective of Tom Wingfield.
The Glass Menagerie is the story of a family desperate to break free of the burdens of their past and their present. Tomѻýs mother, Amanda, has been abandoned by her husband and now lives only for her children. His unmarried sister, Laura, is a fragile and painfully shy creature who retreats into a world of glass animals and Tom is torn between his poetic inclinations and the responsibility of supporting his mother and sister. Each escapes into their own personal ѻýglass menagerieѻý as a means of eluding the pain of their own - and each otherѻýs - existence.
The Glass Menagerie plays July 5 to 22. Shows run Wednesday to Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. with a 1 Saturday matinee. (Dinner seating is 5:45pm). Dinner, show only, dessert only options available.
