Okanagan College (OC) is launching a new program aimed at helping recent high school graduates and young adults explore careers in architecture, construction, and engineering.
The Certificate in Essential Technical Skills for Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE Certificate) offers a 14-month blend of classroom learning, online courses, and paid industry internships.
Developed by Local Practice Architecture + Design in partnership with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), the program is supported by the provincial Workplace Innovation Fund. It addresses labour shortages and better prepares workers for the evolving economy.
ѻýThis initiative is all about building futures, both for learners and for the industries that support our economy,ѻý said Sam Lenci, OC's provost and vice president academic. ѻýBy educating learners with in-demand technical knowledge and hands-on skills, weѻýre not only setting them up for employment, weѻýre setting them up for fulfilling, long-term careers.ѻý
The program begins with three in-person courses at OC's Kelowna campus this summer, covering digital modelling, project management, communication, professionalism, and building technology. Students then engage in two 23-week paid internships and online studies, gaining real-world experience and industry connections.
ѻýBCIT is committed to removing barriers and creating flexible pathways to education,ѻý said Jennifer Figner, BCIT's provost and vice president academic. ѻýThis partnership with Okanagan College exemplifies the collaborative strength of post-secondary, industry, and government in providing accessible, hands-on training that prepares learners for in-demand careers.ѻý
Applications are open until June 15 for students graduating high school in 2023, 2024, or 2025 (and who will be 18 by September). Tuition for the 2025/2026 program is fully funded through the Workplace Innovation Fund.
