Okanagan residents are still driving too fast, according to BC Highway Patrol.
Through the month of May, the police service held High Risk Driving and Motorcycle Awareness campaigns across the province. Over the 31 days, more 2,200 speeding tickets were handed out in the Central Okanagan region. Of those, 94 violations were for excessive speeding and resulted in a vehicle impoundment.
"We had a lot of positive public feedback about the impact of BC Highway PatrolÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s high-visibility enforcement, and weÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™re very happy to do our part to reduce deaths on our roads," said Superintendent Mike Coyle of BC Highway Patrol. "We still find too many examples of irresponsible driving."
Over the course of the month, more than 9,600 speeding tickets were handed out province-wide. More than 1,900 of them happened during the Victoria Day long weekend. However, "for the first time in at least six years," no deaths were recorded on B.C. roads during the May long weekend.
BC Highway Patrol will be conducting a Summer Impaired Driving campaign soon.
"Refocus and take safe driving more seriously," added Coyle. "The heat of summer will bring a lot more traffic on B.C. Highways."
