UPDATE: New wildfire above West Kelowna being held

The blaze is estimated to be 0.15 hectares in size

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.

A second wildfire that sparked about West Kelowna is now being held. 

The Smith Creek fire grew to just 0.15 hectares before fire crews got a handle on it. 

The fire is under investigation. 

UPDATE 3 p.m.

A wildfire in West Kelowna has sparked in the same area as a wildfire earlier today, Aug. 13. 

BC Wildfire Service has put the blaze near Smith Creek on the map at 0.009 hectares. 

UPDATE 11:26 a.m.

The Powers Creek wildlife is being held, meaning its expected to remain within its control/perimeter lines.

UPDATE: 11 a.m.

The Powers Creek fire has grown to .1 hectares over an hour.

BC Wildfire is responding with 11 personnel and two helicopters which are using Shannon Lake to gather water to douse the blaze.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue is supporting BC Wildfire crews. 

Fire information officer Taylor Wallace says the blaze is still considered out of control and the cause is suspected to be human. 

According to a West Kelowna resident who posts to TikTok as ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½˜Weather from the deckÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™, fireworks were set off Tuesday night.

The resident captured the fireworks being lit on Carrot Mountain. 

Others on social media claim three people were spotted coming out of the woods by Powers Creek wearing headlamps following the fireworks. 


A small fire sparked just before 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Powers Creek area of West Kelowna. 

BC Wildfire and West Kelowna Fire crews are responding.

The blaze is estimated to be 0.009 hectares in size. 

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
