Update: 10:25 a.m. June 3

Police say a crash that closed a portion of Vernon's Bella Vista Road on Saturday was a case of impaired driving.

Officers were called to the single-vehicle collision in the 4200 block of the road shortly after 8 a.m. May 31. At the scene, they found a grey Hyundai had struck a utility pole and crashed through a fence.

The driver of the vehicle was ordered to provide a breath sample after an officer noticed several signs of alcohol impairment, said RCMP media relations officer Const. Chris Terleski.

The 20-year-old Vernon man failed the roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

The driver was taken to hospital for assessment. No other injuries were reported to police at the time.

The road was closed for several hours while crews repaired the damaged utility pole.
