Revelstoke's fire chief is advising residents to not panic about a small wildfire that BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) identified Wednesday morning on nearby Boulder Mountain.

The spot fire, smaller than a tennis court at 0.009 hectares, was burning out of control somewhere high up on the mountain into the afternoon of Aug. 13, with no smoke clearly visible from downtown Revelstoke.

BCWS and Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services (RFRS) have both confirmed the fire was caused by lightning, following a storm the previous night in this corner of the Southeast Fire Centre.

"I want to assure everyone that we are aware of the situation and have reported it to the BC Wildfire Service," Fire Chief Steven DeRousie said in a statement shared by the City of Revelstoke. "At this time, the fire is not a threat to the city or surrounding communities. It is being closely monitored, and weÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™ll continue to stay in communication with provincial wildfire authorities. We appreciate your vigilance and encourage everyone to stay informed through official channels."

This includes checking for the latest information via BCWS, DriveBC and Environment and Climate Change Canada, he said.

DeRousie added that residents can expect to hear about any changes to the Boulder Mountain fire via the city's and RFRS's social media.

BCWS has not indicated a response for the fire or put restrictions in place for the popular biking mountain, and last updated its report shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
