What started eight years ago as a few guys who wanted to get together to play some music has now turned into an 18-member band with their own scotch by Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery.
Three Scotch In held a VIP EP listening party at Kelownaѻýs Okanagan Spirits on Wednesday, Aug. 6, to celebrate their first musical recording album.
Frontman Scott Osborne said that while there are 18 roster members, they donѻýt usually all play together, but instead have certain musicians come together in different modes at different times.
ѻýI would say the best mode for Three Scotch In is a five-piece. Four-piece is great as well. Five-piece gets a little bit more dynamic and depth, but I can concentrate on my voice instead of playing guitar as well,ѻý explained Osborne.
Described as a blues, rock, groove band with a bit of country, the group's name originally came from Osborneѻýs nickname "Scotch."
ѻýWhen we started out, we were three of us. So many people thought that was why it was, Three Scotch In. If there were four of us that showed up, they would be, ѻýoh, now, you're Four Scotch In,ѻý said the lead guitarist. ѻýNow, that's not where the name came from. That's what people like to think. The name is about being 'Three Scotch In' or three, whatever in, and the music getting you there.ѻý
Singing since the age of nine and playing guitar for 20 years, Osborne grew up in Grand Cash, Alta., before moving to Penticton several years ago and settling down.
ѻýI am suspected to have a brain disease that I got from a little too many hits to the head,ѻý said Obsborne. ѻýSo, I am currently a stay-at-home dad of five kids, two of whom are twins.ѻý
On Wednesday night, Osborne was accompanied by the longest Three Scotch In member, Aaron Gordon, who plays drums as well as guitar.
ѻýI met Aaron through a local musician named Kyle Hayes, and once we met, there was an instant spark, an instant connection. We knew we wanted to make music together. It didn't take long,ѻý said Osborne.
The groupѻýs first single came out in 2020, but along with the rest of the world, things fell silent for a while during the pandemic. However, it did give the musicians some time to write songs and market themselves.
It also led the way to the band getting its own whisky, by Okanagan Spirits - Three Scotch In, a select single malt scotch.
ѻýWe did a tasting with them (Okanagan Spirits) and learned about how they select their batches from the middle, if you know anything about distilling, all of the gross stuff kind of floats to the bottom or goes to the top,ѻý explained Osborne. ѻýThat is the really gross alcohol that you don't want to drink. But, Okanagan Spirits takes the middle, the glorious middle.ѻý
Playing in the past for mostly friends, family and at weddings, the band can now often be heard jamming at Freddyѻýs Brew Pub in Kelowna, including tonight, Aug. 8, and Aug. 22. Further north, the band will be in Revelstoke Aug. 29 to 31 for Rockin' Revy.
