City of Kelowna staff will be reviewing council policies to determine which ones to keep, update, or eliminate.
There are currently 124 policies in effect under the council policy framework, which promotes good governance. The framework was last updated in 2015. A significant number of policies could use improvement, council heard at its May 5 meeting.
ѻýWhen policies arenѻýt regularly reviewed we expect to see certain problems emerging,ѻý explained Michael Jud, deputy city clerk. ѻýWe expect to see over time, policies becoming out of step with the realities of the city, and increasing discordance with what weѻýre looking to achieve as an organization.ѻý
Staff are also looking to identify what Jud called ѻýlow-valueѻý policiesѻýthose that no longer contribute to councilѻýs goals. Approximately 20 per cent of current policies have been deemed low-value.
ѻýWe see some significant benefits in getting rid of these policies,ѻý he added.
Mayor Tom Dyas had requested the review from the city clerkѻýs office.
ѻýI went through them, and a lot of them need to be dusted off,ѻý he said. ѻýIf you get an opportunity, go onlineѻýthereѻýs a few beauties in there.ѻý
Going forward, council policies will be reviewed every four years beginning in 2026.
