Kelowna RCMP are reminding bicycle owners to stay alert.
Police say the city has seen an uptake in bike thefts in both residential neighbourhoods and public spaces.
"Bicycle theft is a crime of opportunity,ѻý said Cpl. Allison Konsmo, Media Relations Officer for the Kelowna RCMP. ѻýThieves are often looking for quick access and minimal resistance. Weѻýre encouraging all cyclists to always lock your bike securely, choose well-lit areas, and report any suspicious activity immediately.ѻý
Kelowna cops will be increasing patrols in high-theft areas.
To avoid theft, bike owners should use a high quality u-lock or heavy duty chain to lock up the bike and secure it to a fixed object in a well-lit area. Cyclist should register their bike's serial number with Project 529, keep photos of the bike with its serial number, make, model, value and any distinguishing features.
ѻýWe all have a role to play in keeping our community safe,ѻý added Cpl. Konsmo. ѻýBy staying alert and taking preventative measures, we can reduce theft and help ensure that Kelowna remains a safe place for cyclists and all members of the community.ѻý
