For more than 70 years, Camp OAC in West Kelowna was a place for children to enjoy the beauty of the valley on Okanagan Lake, until the 2023 McDougall Creek wildfire destroyed more than 80 per cent of its buildings and thrust the camp into a rebuild.
With the rebuild of 26 structures underway and set to cost $2-3 million, a Vernon event is looking to raise funds to help with the effort.
The Edge Restaurant and Event Centre up at The Rise Resort is hosting a '70s party with Andrew Johns to help restore Camp OAC to its former glory, throwing it back to the disco decade for a night of music, memories and meaningful impact.
On Friday, Aug. 22, guests are invited to break out their bell-bottoms, sequins and platform shoes for a dazzling 1970s party with Johns. It's a high-energy fundraiser that aims to counteract the devastating impacts of the wildfire.
Camp OAC (Okanagan Anglican Camp) has been a beloved summer tradition for over 75 years, providing memorable experiences for generations of children. The loss of structures at the camp during the wildfire was devastating, but the community is determined to bring the camp back to life.
Demolition and archeological reviews have been completed at Camp OAC, and construction is now poised to begin with the goal of welcoming campers back in the summer of 2026.
The fundraiser at The Edge will feature live entertainment from Johns and his 10-piece band, performing beloved hits; a costume contest judging the best '70s style; retro cocktails and culinary treats; a silent auction featuring coveted items and experiences; and dancing and fun all night long.
Tickets start at $80 with 100 per cent of profits going directly to Camp OAC's rebuild.
