'Everyone okay' after semi collides with van exiting Revelstoke

Family said they didn't see truck coming as they turned eastbound onto Trans-Canada Highway after helping son move in

All individuals involved in a high-speed collision just outside Revelstoke were reportedly "okay" after a van pulled out in front of a semi-trailer driver who said they did what they could to brake.

In a video recently shared on Facebook by Skilled Truckers Canada, dashcam footage on the semi shows the truck proceeding eastbound along a 100-kilometres-per-hour zone on the Trans-Canada Highway, when a van slowly pulls out in front at Revelstoke's southern exit.

The semi had been hauling a "lightly-loaded" trailer weighing below 80,000 pounds.

"I had already lifted the throttle 'cause it looked like they (the van) might try something, but then they didn't pin it and my brakes weren't enough to avoid them," the unnamed semi driver wrote, adding that they weren't prepared to cross the centre line into oncoming traffic to dodge the van.

The footage shows the front of the semi slam the van's back corner just past CP Hill, sending it spiralling left into the opposite lane. Photos from the scene show both vehicles badly damaged, with the front of the semi cracked and the back of the van crumpled.

The semi driver is now "down and unable to work, with a huge insurance claim," according to the post, but reported "everyone OK." When they exited their truck to check on the van, the driver told them, "I didn't even see you."

He and his passenger, both from Perth, Australia, were leaving Revelstoke after helping their son move in from Squamish, the post added.
