A public hearing is coming up soon in Armstrong as the local golf course looks to add tourist campsites to its property.
The Overlander Golf and Events Centre (formerly the Royal York Golf Course) is proposing a zoning bylaw amendment to allow for the addition of six unserviced RV tourist campsites to the golf course on York Avenue.
Members of the public are invited to attend the public hearing regarding the proposal on Monday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. at Armstrong council chambers, 3535 Bridge St.
The proposed bylaw change can be viewed at . It will also be available for viewing at the public hearing.
If passed, the amended bylaw would not connect the campsites to water or sanitary services without city review and approval. Landscaper buffers between the campsites and residential properties would be at least eight metres long by three metres adjacent to the property line. One bathroom would be required per every three campsites, and garbage bins would be installed.
The campsites are the latest project at a golf course that has seen dramatic changes in recent years, with the nine-hole course reconfigured and shrunk considerably in size to make way for roughly 140 housing units ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½” changes that began in 2021 amid spirited protest from club members who didn't want to see the track changed.
The golf course was built by the York family, and in 2020 Todd York ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½” who remains part of the course's new ownership group ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½” presented a new vision for the golf course to keep it financially sustainable. He set that vision in motion with developer Patrick Place.
Rezoning on Murray Drive
The City of Armstrong has also issued a notice of consideration for a zoning amendment at 3785 Murray Dr. A bylaw amendment has been proposed to change a portion of the property's zoning from country residential to residential medium density. This would pave the way for the subdivision of residential lots.
The city notes the proposal aligns with the Official Community Plan designation of single/two unit residential.
The city is prohibited from holding a public haring about the proposal by the Local Government Act, and the public is not allowed to address council regarding the proposal during council meetings.
