Kelowna ¸é´Ç³¦°ì±ð³Ù²õÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™ bench boss Jason Smith will coach against the WHL he played for in the 1990s

±õ³ÙÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s been 23 years since Jason Smith wore the uniform of the Regina Pats.

And while history will always connect the Kelowna ¸é´Ç³¦°ì±ð³Ù²õÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™ head coach to his former team, Smith insists there will be little need for reflection during ³§²¹³Ù³Ü°ù»å²¹²âÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s game at Prospera Place.

Finding a way to knock off the Pats (16-2-3-0)ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½”o²Ô±ð of the °Â±á³¢ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s top teams early in the ²õ±ð²¹²õ´Ç²ÔÎÚÑ»´«Ã½”w¾±±ô±ô be ³§³¾¾±³Ù³óÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s and the ¸é´Ç³¦°ì±ð³Ù²õÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™ sole objective.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ÀáÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™m not looking at it as anything else than another important game for ³Ü²õ,ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ said Smith, who played for the Pats in the early 1990s.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Àá³ÙÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™l±ô be a great challenge for us, ³Ù³ó±ð²âÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™r±ð obviously one of the better teams in the league, so hopefully ·É±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™l±ô be able to have some success against ³Ù³ó±ð³¾.ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½

Though he »å´Ç±ð²õ²ÔÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™t get overly sentimental about his former team, Smith still appreciates his stint in Regina and how the Pats became the springboard to a long and successful pro career.

The 43-year-old Calgary native spent two seasons before going on to play more than 1,000 NHL games over 15 seasons with five different teams.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Àá³Ù was a great starting point for me to grow as a ±è±ô²¹²â±ð°ù,ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Smith said of his WHL days in Regina.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Àá had an opportunity to play in a lot, and in a lot of different situations throughout my time there.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Àá³Ù was a great stepping stone to where I went in my pro ³¦²¹°ù±ð±ð°ù.ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½

Against the Pats, the Rockets (13-11-0) will be looking to rebound from a 6-2 setback Tuesday night against the Royals in Victoria.

The power play was the difference, with the Royals scoring four times, while Kelowna coming up empty with the extra man.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œ±õ³ÙÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s a chance for us to bounce ²ú²¹³¦°ì,ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Smith said ³§²¹³Ù³Ü°ù»å²¹²âÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s game.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œ(±õ²Ô Victoria), we played too much one-man hockey. I thought it was a pretty even game 5-on-5.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œT³ó±ð¾±°ù power play was good, and we ³¦´Ç³Ü±ô»å²ÔÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™t capitalize. °Â±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™l±ô get back to work and be ready for ³§²¹³Ù³Ü°ù»å²¹²â.ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½

The Rockets and Pats face-off Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Rockets will travel to Kennewick, WA, to take on the Tri-City Americans.
