Under the guidance of rookie head coach Claire Meadows last season, UBC Okanagan had itsbest performance yet in Canada West ·É´Ç³¾±ð²ÔÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s basketball.
will look to build on that success when the 2016-17 campaign opens this weekend athome to the Trinity Western Spartans.
Tip off at the Kelowna campus gym is 6 p.m. tonight and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
If a 9-1 exhibition record is any indication, then the Heat should hit the floor running.
And with the return of the majority of her roster, Meadows looks for the Heat to once again holdits own among CIS competition.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œW±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™r±ð fairly mature, we have an older roster and ·É±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™r±ð looking for those players to lead us this²õ±ð²¹²õ´Ç²Ô,ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ said Meadows, whose Heat posted a 10-10 conference record last season.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œH²¹±¹¾±²Ô²µ said that, ·É±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™v±ð brought in a couple of young players who had a good preseasons and·É±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™l±ô be looking to them to add to the ³¾¾±³æ.ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½
Highlighting this ²â±ð²¹°ùÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s returnees is fifth-year guard Emily Kanester, who Meadows said ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œh²¹»å abrilliant ±è°ù±ð²õ±ð²¹²õ´Ç²ÔÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ for the Heat.
Claire Elliott and Olivia Johnson will be the ±á±ð²¹³ÙÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s defensive stalwarts, while co-captain ChloeKennedy will provide both experience and leadership in her fifth and final year.
Immaculata grad Nicole Hart and ³§³Ü°ù°ù±ð²âÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s Emma Jones are freshmen who will be expected tomake contributions.
As for the competition expected this season in Canada West, Meadows said it will be stiff, to saythe least.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œE±¹±ð°ù²â team we play is going to be a formidable ´Ç±è±è´Ç²Ô±ð²Ô³Ù,ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ said Meadows.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½œE±¹±ð°ù²â game is going to be a dogfight, so we just need to look after our end of things and makesure ·É±ðÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™r±ð prepared.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ÀáÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™m not so much concerned about wins and losses, but our goal is to work our butts off andmake the ±è±ô²¹²â´Ç´Ú´Ú²õ.ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½
