UPDATE: Multiple crews extinguish grass fire in Penticton

The fire was called in around 12:40 p.m.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.

The fire is mostly out, with some smoke lingering as crews are extinguishing the last of the blaze. 

RCMP are also now at the scene.

Smoke can be seen in the Penticton sky as crews battle the blaze along Channel Parkway (Highway 97).

The right lane is closed northbound on the the highway. 

According to a Black Press Media reporter at the scene, fire crews are trying to keep the fire from reaching the wastewater treatment plant.

The Penticton Fire Department has two engines and around a dozen firefighters on scene. BC Wildfire Service is also on scene.

Penticton emergency crews are on their way to a grass fire at Channel Parkway (Highway 97) and Green Mountain Road.

A vehicle's back tire is the apparent cause of the blaze. High winds are reported in the area. 

Black Press Media has a reporter heading to the scene.
